Releases (EN)

The data from BRO Next is made available through data releases, which can then be accessed via IDS. Below, for each release, it is indicated whether changes have been (or are expected to be) made.

Release 6 – expected Q1 2026

Release 6 (R6) is an inventory update, without methodological adjustments. R6 includes all inventory submitted to BRO Next up to and including 13 June 2025.

Release 5 – publication date: 6 November 2025

In the autumn of 2025, Release 5 (R5) was published. R5 includes all inventory submitted to BRO Next up to and including 4 April 2025. In this release:

  • Operating hours have been added. This means that for traditional frames the lighting factor is no longer taken into account outside operating hours. This may result in a decrease at frame level. For digital frames, there are no results outside the operating hours, as the screen is switched off then. If you already added a spot plan that matches the operating hours, you will not see this decrease.
  • Parking garages have been linked to shopping centers. This results in more traffic at the entrances connected to them, which in turn affects the distribution within the shopping centers. At frame level, this may lead to differences within a shopping center. The total number of visitors to a shopping center remains the same.
  • The research into waiting locations has been applied in the data in R5 for boarding passengers on train and metro platforms. This means that boarding passengers have a longer opportunity to see a spot. A detailed explanation of the waiting locations can be found here (only available in Dutch).

Release 4 – publication date: 29 July 2025

Release 4 (R4) was published in the summer of 2025 and includes all inventory submitted to BRO Next up to and including 15 November 2024. Release 4 is a big release. This means that all traffic volumes are also updated to the most recent version. In this case, this involves a jump from 2019 to 2023. Earlier updates were not possible due to (excessive) COVID-related impacts on mobility. From now on, we can update traffic intensities annually again.

In R4, several important methodological changes were implemented:

  • The new indoor pedestrian model has been applied to all indoor locations. This may have an impact at frame level. In the new indoor pedestrian model, there is relatively more crowding near entrances and exits and less towards the edges. As a result, significant differences may be visible at frame level. On average across all frames, this is not the case.
  • The outdoor pedestrian model has been further refined based on focal points. This provides better insight into pedestrian flows on squares and improves the distribution across entrances to indoor locations. In both models, the total number of visitors to a location remains the same, but the distribution is different. Intensities in city centers are further optimized, and the distribution of intensities across the days of the week is refined slightly further. This may have an impact at frame level.
  • Public transport depots in major cities have been merged, making it easier, for example, to select trams.
  •

Release 3 – publication date: 17 March  2025

At the end of Q1 2025, Release 3 (R3) was published. R3 includes all inventory submitted to BRO Next up to and including 1 July 2024. In R3, several important methodological adjustments were made:

  • A start was made with the new indoor pedestrian model in shopping centres, resulting in relatively higher traffic near entrances and exits. The full model was ultimately rolled out in R4.
  • At petrol stations, cars can be distributed by nozzle number, allowing traffic flows to be modelled even more realistically.
  • The number of people in a car at a petrol station has been increased to 1,3. For some frames this means that more people will be able to them.
  • For digital frames, the distribution across weekdays has been further refined. This may cause some shifts in the results.
  •

Release 2 – publication date: 22 August 2024

Release 2 (R2) has been available since the summer of 2024. R2 includes all inventory submitted to BRO Next up to and including 17 April 2024. In this release, one methodological adjustment was made:

  • Pedestrian speed at metro and train stations was fixed at 2 km/h, in anticipation of the waiting location study. This study has been applied since Release 5 (R5).
  •

Release 1 – publication date: 15 April 2024

With the first BRO Next release (R1), a completely new and advanced dataset was made available to the market. Read all about the differences in the statement in Dutch or English
